Description
On the basis of the ancient and medieval written sources, epic heritage, ethnographic materials of the 19th-20th centuries, contemporary observations, the boundaries of the cultural area were determined, where the kumis traditions arose, developed and changed as a derivative of the horse breeding culture for more than two and a half thousand years. Ancient sources testify to the existence of mare‘s milk beverage as early as the beginning of the 1st millennium BC. The wonderful milkers of mares and Hippomolgian are mentioned in the Iliad of Homer, the papers of Herodotus, Hippocrates, Strabo, Theopompus. The territory of settlement of the ancient Hippomolgian includes a significant area of the Pontus Euxine, Thrace, Phrygia, Lydia, Sinope. The article outlines a variety of the names of mare‘s milk beverage distributed among the contemporary Turkic and Mongolian peoples. The sources involved show the loss of kumis traditions in the west of the steppe belt of Eurasia, including the Black Sea region and the Balkans. On the territory of North, Central Asia and Volga region, the kumis traditions not only retain their stability, but took on increasing importance in new forms of commemoration of the horse breeding culture.
