Description
This two-volume work written by Kyrgyz ethno-musicologist and komuz player Asan Kaibylda uulu presents findings from over 20 years of ethnographic research on Kyrgyz komuz music. The books contains rich narratives on the history of Kyrgyz küü, instrumental music played primarily on the three-stringed instrument, komuz, and a comprehensive study of all known and unknown, recorded and unrecorded Kyrgyz instrumental music by master komuz players. The volumes are supplemented by music CDs with over 100 komuz melodies, with narratives on their histories by the author. Through these rich histories of küüs, we learn about the historic path of the Kyrgyz, their place in world history, their worldview, mentality, philosophy, psychology, economy, socio-political conditions, nomadic life, and other aspects of their culture. The author presents a comprehensive study and analysis of various genres of all known and unknown, recorded, and unrecorded Kyrgyz melodies composed in the last three centuries. Each volume is supplemented with CDs. Volume 1 (832 pages) presents information on all Kyrgyz traditional instruments, classification of all küüs and their genres, descriptions of various komuz players and regional komuz schools, various themes as well as narrative histories of old and popular folk mel¬odies. Volume 2 (656 pages) contains narrative history of komuz melodies composed about major historical events and well-known Kyrgyz personalities of the last three centuries. Both volumes contain the lists of all küüs recorded for the musical sound archive “Gold¬en Fund” (Zolotoi Fond) of Kyrgyz National Radio and are accompanied with a CD containing 57 komuz melodies played by master komuz players and over 58 radio programmes called “Küü bayanï” (History of a Küü) authored and narrated by Asan Kaybïlda uulu. The book is intended for a wide range of audiences such as students and scholars of ethnomusicology, artists, anthropologists, historians, music teachers and musicians, as well as anyone who is interested in Kyrgyz nomadic music and oral tradition. It is a first scholarly work dedicated to Kyrgyz komuz melodies, and as such, will make a tremendous contribution to the field of ethnomusicology in general and to the study of Central Asian traditional music and cultural heritage.
